COMING FROM THE BREATH-TAKING CANGGU AND UBUD I INSTANTLY FELL IN LOVE WITH, I WAS PRETTY DISAPPOINTED TO FIND GILI MENO NOTHING LIKE THAT. So we read about the little Gili paradise islands near Bali and we instantly knew we wanted to go there. We compared all 3 of them (Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno) and decided to go on the smallest, least touristic one – Gili Meno.
Oh how I did not like the boat trip (seasickness 1: me 0). First we arrived to Gili Trawangan, because there are no direct connections between Bali and Gili Meno. It looked so much of a party island that we were releaved, we were not staying there. We hopped on another boat that took us to Gili Meno.
I had BIG expectations for this place. What I read about were the empty white sandy beachies, light blue water and palm trees. The truth was not so heavenly.
Our first mistake was taking an accomondation in the middle of the island. The inlnand could not even be compared to the beach side. There were locals living, who did not AT ALL care about their surroundings – they had so much trash in their yards and in front of their houses. It was quite disturbing to see.
Secondly, we thought we wanted the non-touristic vibe, but the truth is – you want a selection of places to eat. Also there was not much to do in the evenings. And we were quite many times without electricity.
I am a total fan of everything green and Gili Meno didn’t have such lush palm trees and plants as Bali did. The nature was not tropical AT ALL (besides the palm trees at the beach), mostly it looked dry and dying.
But of course, not everything there was bad. Most days we spent in the beach reading books, sunbathing and drinking mango smoothies. We also snorkelled for the first time, which was pretty cool! I liked the laid-back vibe of Gili Meno, it really felt like million miles away from everything else.
WOULD I RECOMMEND GOING THERE?
Well, no. To me it was not worth it and next time I would rather stay longer on Bali or check out Lombok. But I guess people are different. All i can say is do a lot of research, before you decide to take a trip to the Gili islands.
